REPAIRS

repairs

Repairs are an essential part of the jewellery trade, especially with sentimental heirloom pieces and stones, not to mention a public love for antique jewellery. Our in-house repairer Michael Daniels alongside our diamond setters Jason Gordon and Paul Brierly make light work of any complex repair, we are happy to help you resolve your jewellery issues.

Some brief tips before you bring your piece to us for repair:

  • A written description of the item is useful. Point out the hallmark, any missing stones, scratches or dents. It’s also advisable to take a photo of your jewellery with a date.
  • There are problems that can arise during any works requiring heat. Firstly, most stones are susceptible to heat damage. Amber, pearls, mother-of-pearl, turquoise can scorch when subjected to high temperatures and they don’t have to be close to the damage site which is being worked on. These may need to be removed when repairing. A stone may break as well when being removed, especially with certain types of settings. You need to be clear on if you are happy to take this risk.
  • Sometimes stones have hairline fractures which are not noticeable to the naked eye and can only be seen using a magnifying loupe or by carefully running a fingernail over the stone surface. It is worth asking to double check the stone state using these methods as prior discussion can save problems (and shocks) later on.
  • Special finishes may need to be reapplied after repair work takes place, check this with us before submitting your piece and we’ll advise you.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us for a free consultation about your problem piece, as well as a cost estimate without the retail overheads.

RING SIZING

ring sizing

Whether you’ve lost weight, worn a shank thin, damaged a shank or your partner mis-judged your ring size, adjusting this won’t be an issue at Max Diamonds. We can work with practically any ring to adjust or rebuild or alter it to fit you perfectly. The only exception to this service is with eternity and some other gemstone rings: due to the setting construction, these cannot be resized simply, although we may be able to offer a solution so please do ask us!

Here are some tips for achieving the right ring size to help you decide if you are looking for a bespoke piece, or to establish your new ring size for your existing ring:

  • The thicker the ring, the tighter the fit, so if you choose a ring with a deep band width, you will likely need to go one size up.
  • The best time of day to measure is in the evening, when your fingers are largest. Avoid measuring when you’re cold, as fingers are at least half a size smaller.

To help you find the right ring size our table shows the inside circumference of each UK ring size. Please note that this is a guide only and it is adviseable to have a measurement taken in-house for the perfect fit. You can download our ring size chart and tool in PDF format here>>

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at Max Diamonds to discuss your resizing requirements.

JEWELLERY CARE

jewellery care
Our carefully hand-crafted jewellery is built to last, but appropriate care will help it last forever. Getting your jewellery professionally cleaned and polished once a year is a good idea: it keeps it looking its shiniest and gives a trained professional the opportunity to check it for damage that you might not notice. In between annual cleanings, however, you can keep it looking its best at home by following this advice to help reduce wear and tear:
  • Put your jewellery on after applying makeup, perfume, or hair products.
  • Handle gems and pearls as little as possible; the natural oils on your skin can dull the stone.
  • Remove bracelets and rings if you’re doing any manual labour, including housework.
  • Remove earrings when your hair is being styled, to keep them from getting caught on combs or brushes. And never wear pearl earrings or necklaces when you’re having your hair coloured – the chemicals can damage the pearls’ sheen.
Even clean-looking diamonds are likely to have natural oils from your skin on them. They’ll sparkle much more after you clean them. Use a soft-bristled, non-metallic brush and a solution of dish detergent and water, or mild ammonia and water. Gently scrub them, before rinsing in a wire strainer and patting dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. This advice is just a brief insight, for any further help, please don’t hesitate contact us here at Max Diamonds.
